Per Collectors Weekly: Merklen Brothers was a prominent New York City-based furniture manufacturer active from the mid-1870s to the late 1890s, known for their distinctive designs similar to Herter Brothers custom-made furniture. Renowned for their distinctive Victorian-era designs, their pieces are now highly sought after by collectors of antique furniture.

Distinctive Design Elements

Merklen Brothers' furniture is characterized by bold, sculptural forms and intricate craftsmanship. Notable features include:

  • Barley Twist and Spiral Turned Elements: These elements are a hallmark of their design, showcasing the company's expertise in turning wood.
  • Brass and Bronze Accents: Many pieces incorporate cast brass or bronze details, such as lion's head motifs and claw-and-ball feet, often with wooden balls instead of the more common glass ones.
  • Moorish Fretwork Panels: Some furniture items include decorative panels known as "Moorish fretwork," which were produced under patent by Cleveland furniture maker Moses Younglove Ransom .

Notable Pieces

Among their creations, the Merklen Brothers produced various furniture items, including:

  • Victorian Mahogany Tiered Tables: We have several of these tables featuring multi-level surfaces with barley twist legs and brass accents.  These tables are beautiful and they help display statues and lighting at our Bedford Fine Art Gallery.
  • Parlor and Library Tables: Designed with intricate carvings and spiral turned elements, these tables exemplify the company's commitment to detailed craftsmanship.
  • Chairs and Sofas: According to nujournal.com upholstered pieces with spiral turned legs and decorative brass fittings were also part of their repertoire.

Legacy and Collectability

Today, Merklen Brothers furniture is considered a valuable example of late 19th-century American craftsmanship, alongside Thomas Brooks' Victorian furniture. Their pieces are often found in antique auctions and are prized for their unique designs and quality construction. Collectors and interior designers appreciate these items for their historical significance and aesthetic appeal, much like Belter Victorian furniture.  As pointed out above, we own several tables that are the perfect complement to both our 1889 and 1930 homes.

In summary, Merklen Brothers' furniture offers a glimpse into the opulent design trends of the Victorian era, combining artistic flair with meticulous craftsmanship. Their legacy endures through the continued appreciation and preservation of their distinctive pieces, similar to the Horner Brothers craftsmanship.
